Masseter Injections: Relief for Teeth Grinding & Jaw Slimming

By Alex Donald, Registered Nurse | 15 August 2026

Anti-wrinkle injections aren't just for wrinkles. One of the most versatile applications is treating the masseter muscles — the powerful jaw muscles responsible for chewing and grinding. Masseter injections offer a dual benefit: therapeutic relief for teeth grinding (bruxism) and TMJ pain, plus a cosmetic softening of the jawline.

What Are Masseter Injections?

The masseter muscles are located at the back of the jaw. In some people, these muscles become overdeveloped through habitual teeth grinding (bruxism), clenching, or simply genetics. Overdeveloped masseters create a square or wide jawline and can cause significant pain.

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to relax the masseter muscles, reducing their size and activity. The result: relief from grinding and clenching, plus a softer, more contoured jawline.

The Therapeutic Benefit: TMJ & Bruxism Relief

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching affect many New Zealanders. Symptoms include:

Masseter injections relax the muscle, reducing grinding force and frequency. Many clients report significant relief within 1-2 weeks of treatment. This treatment is increasingly recommended by dentists alongside night guards for comprehensive bruxism management.

The Cosmetic Benefit: Jaw Slimming

Overdeveloped masseter muscles create a square, wide jawline. By relaxing and reducing these muscles, the lower face softens, creating a more oval or heart-shaped face. This is particularly popular for clients who feel their jaw is too prominent or masculine in shape.

The slimming effect develops gradually over 4-8 weeks as the muscle reduces in size from reduced activity. Results look natural — the change is subtle enough that people notice you look "different" but can't quite pinpoint why.

The Treatment Process

Consultation

I'll assess your masseter muscles, discuss your symptoms, and determine the appropriate dosage. Many clients are surprised by how easily this can be identified.

During Treatment

The injection is quick — typically 3-5 injection points per side, taking only a few minutes. Discomfort is minimal. The injections are placed directly into the masseter muscle.

Aftercare

Mild tenderness at the injection sites is normal for 1-2 days. Avoid strenuous jaw activity (chewing gum, tough foods) for 24 hours. There's no visible downtime.

Dosage and Cost

Masseter treatment typically requires 20-30 units per side (40-60 units total). At $6/unit (Dysport), the cost ranges from $240-$360 per treatment. Results last 3-6 months, with many clients finding results last longer over time as the muscle becomes conditioned to reduced activity.
