New Zealand has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and Kiwis know the toll sun damage takes on skin. Whether it's sunspots, melasma, or general uneven tone, pigmentation is one of the most common concerns I treat at Embrace Cosmetics. The good news: it's treatable, and the results can be transformative.
Also known as sunspots or age spots, these are flat brown patches caused by cumulative UV exposure. They appear on areas most exposed to the sun — face, hands, and décolletage. They develop gradually over years of sun exposure.
Melasma appears as larger, patchy brown areas, usually on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. It's often triggered by hormonal changes (pregnancy, oral contraceptives) combined with sun exposure. Melasma can be stubborn and requires a targeted approach.
Dark marks left after acne, injury, or inflammation. These fade over time but can be accelerated with treatment.
MeLine is our dedicated pigmentation treatment. It uses active ingredients that inhibit melanin production while gently exfoliating existing pigmentation. Suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones. A course of 3-6 treatments is typically recommended.
SkinPen microneedling improves skin texture and can help with PIH by stimulating collagen production and accelerating skin cell turnover. It's particularly effective when combined with pigmentation-targeting skincare.
Belotero Revive hydrates and improves skin quality, helping to even out tone and support the healing process alongside pigmentation treatments.
LED therapy reduces inflammation and supports skin healing after pigmentation treatments, enhancing results.
No pigmentation treatment will work if you don't protect your skin from further UV damage. Daily SPF 30+ sunscreen is non-negotiable. In NZ, this means year-round, not just in summer. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors. Without sun protection, pigmentation will return — it's that simple.
The most effective pigmentation results come from combining treatments. A typical plan might include:
Results develop gradually over 2-3 months. Consistency is key — both with treatments and with your at-home skincare routine.
Honestly, pigmentation can be managed but not permanently "cured" — especially melasma, which can recur with sun exposure or hormonal changes. The goal is significant improvement and ongoing maintenance. With the right treatment plan and consistent sun protection, most clients see 60-80% improvement in their pigmentation.
